How AI is Impacting Employment for Skilled Immigrants

Artificial intelligence is transforming many aspects of the workplace, including hiring and recruitment.

While AI hiring tools promise to remove bias and streamline the process, recent reports reveal these tools may actually be limiting opportunities for skilled immigrants.

As AI continues to evolve, addressing these challenges will be key to ensuring fair access to employment.

AI and Prejudice

When used properly, AI hiring tools can help companies efficiently sort through high volumes of applicants to identify the most qualified candidates.

However, these tools rely on algorithms trained on previous hiring data, which can inadvertently perpetuate existing biases

A recent study by Upturn found that a popular AI career guidance tool improperly recognized education and work experience for immigrants 35% and 20% of the time, respectively. As a result, the tool's job recommendations for these users were inaccurate and limited.

This creates a frustrating catch-22 where immigrants can't get jobs without local experience, but can't gain experience without getting hired first.

Steps to Take with AI

While some fear AI will displace human jobs, these technologies are more likely to augment existing roles and create demand for new skills. But employers must ensure their use of AI does not shut out immigrant talent, which makes up over 17% of the US workforce

Companies can take steps to develop ethical and inclusive AI systems, such as:
  • Auditing algorithms for bias and utilizing diverse training data is key.
  • Being transparent about how these tools evaluate candidates also builds trust.
  • Keeping humans involved in final hiring decisions reduces overreliance on AI recommendations.
Integrating qualified immigrants remains vital for addressing tech talent shortages. With careful implementation, AI hiring tools can remove barriers, not create new ones.

Ensuring these technologies expand, rather than limit, opportunities will benefit both companies and immigrant job seekers alike.
